Music Of Tonight

So, it was Andrew Lloyd Webber night on American Idol - eagerly anticipated for the last few days - and now I feel compelled to post about said evening.

I also feel a bit scared that the website designed to promote our writing and professional career seems to have degraded into an Idol chat. But I've made my peace with it.

So onto the singing...

Syesha: "One Rock 'N Roll Too Many"
Biggest surprise of the evening for me. Of course, she won bonus points right off the bat for choosing a song from Starlight Express. But I thought she really rocked it and showed more personality in two minutes than she has all season. Minor misstep as I think she started the song a beat early, but big thumbs up from me on this performance.

Jason: "Memory"
Seriously, dude? How stoned was he when he made that choice? And how can someone young and in the prime of life pretend to sing a song in which you have the lyrics "I can smile at the old days. I was beautiful then"? So many questions, so little time. But the bigger surprise was that his voice really couldn't handle it. I think it was a wise choice to mellow it out rather than go power ballad, but the low register seemed to be killing him. My guess is that we've seen the last of Jason.

Brooke: "You Must Love Me"
I actually dug this performance. I thought the judges were way too hard on her. Yes, the false start was bad. But once she started over, I thought it was heartfelt. I didn't hear "strained." But I think I'm in the minority here. I've been reading some pretty harsh criticism online. After Jason, Nunzio and I said someone would have to crash and burn to save him from elimination. But when Brooke first finished and they ragged on her, I thought she had achieved the impossible. I think, however, that Simon chiming in and saying he would have started over too will have saved her for another week.

David A.: "Think Of Me"
I'm actually quite fond of this song, and I wasn't at all surprised that little Archuleta picked it. But god save me from the poppy junior version he went with. I agree with Simon. It was "pleasant." But that's about all. Can we say boring and predictable as well? And I seriously wanted to clock Randy upside the head. I hate HATE the obvious pimping. Let's try for a little subtlety at least. But really? "You are the one to beat!" says Randy. And here I thought, if you look at each contestant's body of work, that David Cook was the one to beat. Moving on...

Carly: "Jesus Christ Superstar"
I thought Lord Andrew was genius when he steered Carly away from "All I Ask Of You" to "Jesus Christ Superstar." And I sat on the edge of my seat eagerly awaiting the performance. I was sorely disappointed. I really expect more from Carly. I was her number 1 fan from the first day. But each week I get a little more discouraged. First of all, she BUTCHERED the lyrics. I mean seriously butchered them. And not a single judge called her on it. And second, her "big voice" just didn't quite deliver to me. I can't remember now if I thought the key was too high for her or what, but it wasn't quite the rockin' performance I wanted it to be. Still, it's a fun enough song that it doesn't take much to carry it.

David C.: "Music Of The Night"
This boy can really sing ANYTHING. And the thing is, objectively speaking, he's not that attractive. But he was so sexy singing this song. I truly believe he delivered on all fronts. And proved that he has all kinds of range. Explain to me again, why HE isn't the one to beat? But I'm also hoping that in about two weeks he ends his run. Just ask Daughtry. He knows the way to a brilliant career.

And there, for better or worse, are my thoughts. Next to go - Jason Castro. Bottom three: Jason, Brooke and Carly.

Comments:
Because of your blog post, I watched American Idol last night for the first time since the Clarkson-Guarini years. While I'm still holding out for Stephen Sondheim's visit, I had to see the unholy union of ALW and AI. And, ummm... "Memory"?! WTF? Did that guy not understand a single word of the song? Did no one clue him into Jesus Christ Superstar? Joseph? Seriously, what a radically inappropriate song? He should have been stopped.

I thought the "Think of Me" gender switch was pretty savvy, but I agree that it didn't amount to much more than "pleasant." I'm glad Starlight Express made an appearance, and poor Brooke, she sang "You Must Love Me" at least as well as Madonna.

David Cook "not that attractive"? I beg to differ. Love him in all his snarky glory, and the boy knows how to belt out a power note with a rocker flair. So don't be messing with my favorite Cookie (sorry - I couldn't resist.) He sang my least favorite song from one of my least favorite musicals and made me actually kind of like it. Though I'd ditch the Steven Tyler scarf in the back pocket the next time you're onstage.

I honestly cringed and hid under the blanket when I heard Castro was going to tackle 'Memory'. And tackle it he did. He knocked that thing right down to the ground and stomped all over it. It was just two minutes of pained ick-ness from start to finish. Much as I find him endearing (whereas I find Archie a bit too Children of the Corn for my taste) there was honestly no way he was EVER going to win this thing and it may just be time for everyone's favorite muppet to hit the road. And dude, the musical is called CATS. Shouldn't that have been your first clue that maybe a cat was singing the damn song? And an old, female cat with killer pipes no less. I agree with Christie - someone slipped something in the poor boy's drink when he was making his song selection. Kind of surprised ALW didn't try to talk him out of it, but whatever.

Archie - boring and boy bandish. And talk about pimping - what the hell was with all the squealing girls coming on stage before his performance? Just plain creepy. But hey - no more leather pants, so he gets big points for that at least.

Carly - added some needed energy, but a little all over the place. And ten to one, what Simon liked best about her t-shirt was the way she was jiggling up and down behind it.

Brooke - Eh. Still not sure she quite understood what she was singing about and her jerky, cliched arm movements just proved again that the nanny really has no clue how to move onstage. And did anyone else notice that she stood up in a really weird place? I would have thought the emotion of the lyric would drive her to her feet, not a part of the chorus she'd already sung 3 or 4 times.

Syesha - I have to say, I really liked it. She finally showed us the girl who sang the hell out of 'Chain of Fools' at her audition.

I'm with Christie on this one - I think Castro is on his way home tonight. But - aw crap - does that mean we'll have to listen to him sing that song again...?

I think the thing that bugs me most about Carly's performance isnt the shouteyness of it. After all, Murray Head shouts - a lot - in most of his songs. But he shouts because it's the emotion of the song and the shouts come from an understanding of the words.

So I had a harder time accepting the shouting because Carly so clearly was not connecting to the lyrics.

After all, how can one connect to:
"Every time I look at you I don't understand, why you went the way you did let so out of hand"

I mean, that doesn't even make sense!

what, you've never heard of an avant garde rock opera? :p

i pretty much agree with absolutely everything Christina has said, except that for all its faults i enjoyed Carly's performance overall. and yeah, sadly, Castro's going home tonight unless America becomes uptight about Brooke's false start. anyone who sings ANYTHING from Cats on live TV deserves far worse than being voted off.

i mean, who makes a musical out of a book of TS Eliot poems? i ask you...

Personally, I am so thrilled that your blog has--very temporarily--become an Idol-fest; I loved reading these and can't wait for more. Neil Diamond? Now I actually like all this music but what about a host/guest under 60 for, oh I don't know, the target audience?

Anyway, I am shocked by Carly's departure but maybe I shouldn't be. I think Syesha's best ever carried her through another week, but she would have been my pick to go. Castro was ridiculous, but I still think he's pretty talented. My top three would have been the Davids and Carly, with baby David out, then Carly, then Cook. Now we'll have to see. Brook's last performances have all been mediocre if you ask me. Syesha should get a Boradway show, though, easy, after that. Is it me or is Sir Andrew a bit of a lech?

Personally, as if I needed more proof, last night's cut is the final nail in the coffin for me having any hope about November's election. I think the judges were right when they said it was a popularity contest now because I really do believe Jason needed to go. And I agree with you, Amy. He's pretty talented and has delivered a lot of good performances. But the boy YAWNED as he waited last night to hear the results. And the performance WAS awful. But at least we got to hear Syesha and Carly sing again.

I do think Syesha should focus her efforts on Broadway. Seems like it would be a good fit for her.

And as for guests/mentors under 60... while I agree, I'll take Neil over Mariah any day.

last night was a shocker...i was happy though surprised to see Brooke stay since she was one of my fave four (and we already lost Michael...so i guess i should call them fave three), but Syesha didn't deserve to be in the bottom two last night with that stellar performance. and i think if Carly had sung the song like she did LAST night, she wouldn't have been in the bottom two either. unless my fear is true and people didn't vote for her because she sang a rock song about Jesus that wasn't by Creed. :p anyway, Castro deserved to go both for a crappy performance and for choosing that song. i mean, when you can take one of the worst songs in musical theatre and make it suck even more? it's time to go home. "Ah, geez, I dunno Mr. Kotter...people just really like my dreads, y'know?"

alas, Carly went and i'm down to having a favorite two...Cook and Brooke (though if Syesha keeps up the level of performance she did last week, i'd be willing to consider her as a replacement fave).

I feel bad... I ragged on Carly and now she's gone.

And yeah, her repeat performance, with the lyrics done right, seemed much better to me. So maybe I just got pissy because of her nonsensical lyrical goof.

Either way, even when I thought she was bad, I didn't think she deserved to go. Not on a day when Jason crashed and burned so horrifically (and came off as brain dead - "I didn't know it was sung by a cat").

There's no justice, and Carly should not have gone home, and Syesha definitely should not have been in the bottom 2.

While on the subject of Syesha, I am not ready to make her a favorite yet (and my favorites are the same as yours, Jordan, Cook and Brooke).

Too many bland diva-lite performances from her to date.

But who knew she had such stage presence and sass? She's always had the voice, but she always seemed so uninspired.

She gives another performance like that, though, and I'll be all over the Syesha bandwagon.
